Losing her religion

“Higher Ground” is a beautiful and inspiring story that follows a woman through three decades of her life. Raised in a Christian church, she begins to doubt her faith in the church and of those around her. Inspired by Carolyn Briggs memoir, “This Dark World: Memoir of Salvation Found and Lost,” it tells the woman’s struggle with her faith, marriage, and true love.

Vera Farmiga, also the director, gives a stunning performance as Corrine Walker. Joshua Leonard, who plays Corrine’s husband Ethan, and Dagmara Dominczyk, who plays Corrine’s best friend, were both impressive. Most notable is the debut of Tasissa Farmiga, Vera Farmiga’s sister, as the teenage Corrine. She does an excellent job of capturing the awkward girl who is trying to find her way in life.

The cast blended well together, and delivered a realistic performance about life in a small, Christian community.

“I’m still trying to figure it out,” said audience member Cathy Jacobson. “It had a solid ending, and I thought the cast was very good, especially Vera Farmiga.”

The film was based in a small town in Iowa, with the soundtrack full of hymns to create the rural atmosphere and connect with the overall theme of the movie. It also had a twinge of ironic humor to keep the movie flowing, and brighten it at times since the movie tended to be serious.

The elder Farmiga’s performance had the same sensitivity as in her other roles such as “Up in the Air” and “The Departed.” In this particular role, you can’t help but pity her as she desperately tries to believe.

“I loved this movie, because it showed Christianity in a way that most movies don’t,” said Elizabeth Figura. “A lot of people can relate to Corinne, considering people tend to be confused about what to believe in.”

Because this movie is about religion and doesn’t necessarily show it in the most positive light, it will not be liked by everyone. It will be considered controversial, but I enjoyed it. It talked about the side of Christianity that isn’t always addressed.
While watching this movie you should take in account that this does not say that all Christians behave and live this way, but that there are communities like this.

This visually engaging story demonstrates, through tragedies and blessings, all of our relationships have doubts, whether they’re with your friends, family, or in God.
