Lions crush Rhinos, extend 1st place lead

Orlando, FLA– Orlando City continued their dominance of the USL Pro league Friday night with a 4-0 win over the second place Rochester Rhinos at the Citrus Bowl.

Orlando City scored early and often Saturday night notching three goals in the first half alone, in front of 7,216 home fans.
“That’s as pleased as I’ve been this season. I thought the players were magnificent from the first minute. I thought that our team looked reminiscent to the football that we played this time last season,” said head coach Adrian Heath referring to last year’s championship run.

The Lions began the scoring nine minutes into the match when defender Jerome Mechack brought the ball up the sideline and passed to midfielder Kevin Molino who crossed the ball to a streaking Matt Luzunaris who outran the defender to the ball for an easy goal.

Mechack followed up the assist with a goal of his own five minutes later.

While the Rhinos couldn’t seem to get anything to click on offense, the Lions had no such problems scoring their third goal of the match in the 24th minute, courtesy of a Rob Valentino header.

Orlando was able to add another goal in the 75th minute via penalty kick by newest team acquisition forward Rodrigo Lopez.

Orlando City now has an 11 point lead on the rest of the USL Pro league after the win against the Rhinos.

“I think we have more to prove. We have some great individual players but I think as a team no matter who you put in the starting 11 nobody can touch us,” said Luzunaris.

The Lions have four days off before heading off to face the Charleston Battery July 19. In their previous match-up earlier this season, Orlando City came away with 2-1 victory.
