Lightning in Orlando

The Tampa Bay Lightning, along with Orlando mayor Buddy Dyer, announced Tuesday afternoon that they will be hosting the St. Louis Blues for a preseason game September 21 at the Amway Center.

This game will be the first NHL game played at the new arena and will be the fifth time the Bolts have traveled to Orlando.

“The City of Orlando can’t wait to host the first NHL hockey game in the new Amway Center where the Tampa Bay Lightning will battle the St. Louis Blues,” said Dyer. “We look forward to showcasing the new Amway Center and all of its state-of the-art amenities to hockey fans here in Central Florida and from as far away as St. Louis and giving them and experience they will never forget.”

The Lightning are looking to expand their market and attract fans from Orlando to drive down the I-4 corridor to the St. Pete Times Forum.

“It reminds me how the distance between Tampa and Orlando continues to shrink,” said Dyer.

“This game gives us a great opportunity to more easily reach Lightning fans in the Orlando community as we look to extend our footprint throughout Central Florida,” said Lightning chief operating officer Steve Griggs.

Dave Andreychuk, former Lightning captain and current community ambassador for the team, gave Dyer a personalized Lightning jersey with the team’s new logo.

“September 21 you’re going to put this jersey on, and you’re now going to be a part of Bolt nation,” said Andreychuk. “We expect you to be at the game cheering as hard as anybody else.”

According to the team’s press release, the Amway Center has a capacity of 17,300 in a hockey configuration. Tickets will go on sale to the general public on Saturday, July 23 at 10 a.m. Tickets prices start as low as $10.

“Orlando is all in for hockey,“ says Dyer.
