On Saturday, January 21 – the day after President Trump’s inauguration – thousands of people will descend on Washington D.C. to march for women’s and children’s rights, safety, and health. People from all 50 states are expected to attend including representatives from Central Florida.

“It’s going to be so beautiful seeing literally thousands of people together not only standing up for something greater than themselves, but standing up for their basic human rights. I also hope this march shows this upcoming administration to hear us out; we not only want equality for women, but we want equality for every human being,” Krystal Pherai, of the Valencia College Peace and Justice Institute said.

“I will be flying from Orlando straight to Washington, D.C. Some people from Valencia will be flying to Baltimore and then taking the metro to D.C. We have colleagues and friends that work at UCF that will be there too. Also, the League of Women Voters of Orange County and women-in-politics-supporting group, Emily’s List, will go to the march in Washington. Some colleagues at Planned Parenthood will be at the local march in Orlando,” Pherai added.

In conjunction with the Women’s March on Washington, there will be a rally at several cities around the United States and the world including Orlando. The Women’s Rally of Central Florida will be held at Lake Eola Amphitheater in downtown Orlando beginning at 1pm Saturday, January 21.

Both marches are not only for women. The Women’s March on Washington invites any person regardless of race, gender or gender identity to join. Anyone who believes that women’s rights are human rights can attend.

“I think that it is important to be involved, actively practice your beliefs, and work towards gender equality and human rights. I’m going to the march in D.C. with Rachel Allen, who leads the Peace and Justice Institute,” Jessica Kavalec-Miller, president of the Feminist Association of Valencia East (FAVE), said.

The Women’s March on Washington promises an eclectic group of renown speakers including feminist writer, Gloria Steinem, filmmaker, Michael Moore, actress and activist, Scarlett Johansson along with many other celebrities, guests and political leaders.

“Last I heard, there will be around 1,200 buses of people going to the march in D.C. Also, Orlando’s newly elected Stephanie Murphy will be there. I hope this march makes a positive impact on current gender-equality legislation,” Kavalec-Miller added.
